Glass dome permanently waterproofed to safety glass
A challenging task was successfully completed at the historic Drachenvorburg in Königswinter: the aim was to perform permanent waterproofing of leaky joints in the central glass dome. The challenge lay in the substrate and the structure. Waterproofing was carried out directly onto safety glass, involving numerous details and a system designed to accommodate movement. Working together with Enke, a practical solution was developed using Enkopur, which provides lasting protection and could be reliably applied throughout the construction process.

System solution for the glass dome of the Drachenvorburg
The glass dome connects two sections of the Drachenvorburg and consists of safety glass panes in a double-web system. In the summer of 2010, Mauren Bedachungen from Üxheim took on the task of permanently repairing the leaking areas. Working closely with Enke’s field staff, Thomas Capoccello and Adolf Reuter, a cost-effective and reliable solution was devised.
The process began with the application of an adhesion test. Following thorough cleaning and the application of a primer coat of Enke Glasprimer, the first layer of Enkopur was applied. Enke Polyflex fleece was embedded into the fresh waterproofing layer for reinforcement. A PE round cord ensured the necessary movement compensation, after which a second layer of Enkopur was applied. Following a successful adhesion test, work began on waterproofing the entire dome. To this end, the shading system was dismantled and the old waterproofing removed.
Enkopur was also used in combination with Polyflex fleece for the surface waterproofing. Once the work was complete, the rail systems were installed in a staggered pattern to improve water drainage at intersections. Despite several weather-related interruptions, the construction process remained manageable because Enkopur, as a single component system, can be applied in the rain.
