Gold Rush on the Rhine
Liquid plastic as a waterproofing material and design feature

Gold has always held a fascination for people. Not only as jewellery or an investment, but also as a design element. In architecture, its warm, lustrous hue creates striking accents and gives buildings a distinctive character. The Hotel Rheingold in Gailingen is a perfect example of this. There, liquid plastic was used not only to provide permanent waterproofing, but also to turn the entrance area into a real eye-catcher. The golden finish was achieved using Enkopur and the EMP surface protection.

Design inspiration and precision craftsmanship with Enke

Situated right on the banks of the Rhine, nestled within the Hegau countryside, the Hotel Rheingold welcomes its guests with a spectacular, funnel-shaped entrance area. The structure, made of glued laminated timber and multi-layer panels, was fully coated with a gold-coloured liquid polymer system from Enke. The result is a visual highlight that also provides reliable protection against the elements.

The tried-and-tested Enkopur system with Polyflex fleece was used. The waterproofing is seamless, flexible and adapts securely even to complex geometries. The overhead sections of the timber structure in particular required a great deal of experience and meticulous craftsmanship during application.

After applying the Universal Primer 933, Enkopur was applied in combination with Polyflex fleece. This was followed by a primer coat of Enke 2K Primer, into which quartz sand was worked. This created an even, non-slip surface as the Basis for the final protective layer. The finishing touch was EMP, Enke’s robust and colour-intensive surface protection. For this project, EMP was produced in a specially formulated colour to ensure that the golden hue blends harmoniously with the hotel’s colour scheme.

The result is an entrance area that not only provides waterproofing but also makes a striking impression and sets a clear design statement. The project was skilfully executed by Müllrich of Hilzingen.
